Scarlet Runner Bean (Phaseolus coccineus)
Predating the 18th century, the fast-growing Scarlet is one of the oldest runner beans around. Its vibrant red flowers stand out in the vegetable patch, while its edible beans add utility to more decorative landscaping. Attracts hummingbirds and bees.

- Maturity: 65 days
- Direct sow 1-1 ½” deep in full sun after danger of frost has passed. Beans need soil temperatures between 75-85° F to sprout.

We planted these for the first time last year and were blown away. They are a very prolific long vining bean with incredible bright red flowers. The bean pods can be eaten whole when the pods are small or you can wait for the 8-12 inch long pods filled with colorful beans. This year I'm going to plant them with a high loop trellis because the vines go everywhere once they get going...
