An old American asparagus variety, Connover's Colossal has been almost lost. The modern trend towards pencil thin asparagus has taken us away from the wonderful larger asparagus varieties. Those small spears are from newer plantings, but once you have establish your asparagus bed, over the years the asparagus will become larger, but that doesn't mean less tender or flavorful. Connover's has high yields of large, but tender and very sweet spears. Less work for more delicious asparagus!
